Emerson AU190 Cathedral 1937. One of the earliest Catalin made.
The cathedral shape , Gothic-style, evokes the design of the
early thirties wood cathedral or tombstone. It is one of the
earliest radios made out of cast phenolic material, a form of
plastic. Radios with this type of cabinet are called "Catalins",
even though "Catalin" was the trade name of a cast formaldehyde
resin from the "Catalin Corporation".This particular
radio was made by Monsanto Chemical out of their Opalon cast
resin product. Therefore a more appropriate name should be " Opalon" The subject specimen is in perfect condition.
